China: Emerging Leaders - Itinerary

The Great WallTrace the steps of Lottie Moon as you travel to places that were of significance to her life and ministry.  Visit the old consular city of Yantai, where she first entered China.  Explore her home base city of Penglai, and worship at the old Monument Street Church where she worshiped.  See Pingdu, where she became the first woman to open a mission station alone in China; visit her beloved rural Shaling Village; and take in Qingdao Harbor - from which she sailed, dying en route to America in 1912.

 

As you tour China, see captivating images such as the massive Great Wall, the picturesque Temple of Heaven, and the Ming Tombs guarded by the famous Avenue of Animals.  Inspect the thousands of life-size terra cotta warriors at Xi’an, and visit the well-known Big Wild Goose Pagoda.  End your memorable and inspiring journey in lively Hong Kong, where you may explore Aberdeen Fishing Village and Stanley Market, and have plenty of time to pick up last-minute souvenirs.

 

Itinerary

Tour operated by Dehoney Travel, Inc. of New Albany, IN, who will make every effort to adhere to the itinerary as described.  However, travel in the People's Republic of China is controlled by China International Travel Service (CITS) which reserves the right to modify the itinerary and the sequence in which places are visited, adjusting to current air schedules, special closings, etc.  The hotels listed are subject to availability. 

 

DAY 1 - USA/BEIJING
We depart the USA en route to China. (meals aloft)

 

DAY 2 - BEIJING
Crossing the international dateline we arrive in Beijing and transfer to the Park Plaza Hotel for overnight. (meals aloft)

 

DAY 3 - BEIJING
An excursion out of Beijing takes us to see the Great Wall of China.  The Wall runs 3,852 miles across the northern part of China and has been in existence for more than 2,000 years.  We continue to the Ming Tombs, a valley of 13 tombs of emperors and their consorts, guarded by the world-famous Avenue of Animals. In the evening we are in for an unforgettable gastronomical experience - the famous Peking Duck dinner, one of the tastiest and most unique gourmet dishes in the world!  Overnight at our hotel.      (B,L,D)

 

DAY 4 - BEIJING
Today we see the Temple of Heaven, an incredible wooden structure 125 feet high, built entirely without nails, and possibly the most photographed building in the world.  We visit the Forbidden City (where 24 dynasties of Chinese emperors lived), with its impressive palaces and temples (9000 rooms) containing displays of jade, jewelry and works of art. You will also have some free time for shopping.          (B,L)

 

DAY 5 - BEIJING/XI'AN
Today we transfer to the airport for our flight to Xi'an, once the largest city in the world and ancient capital of eleven dynasties.  Considered to be the cradle of Chinese civilization, Xi'an is a city rich in archaeological treasures. Upon arrival, we check in to the Grand New World Hotel.             (B)

 

DAY 6 - XI'AN
Full day of touring with the highlight of our day being a visit to the burial site of the Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi, where an army of thousands of life-size terra cotta warriors have stood guard in front of his tomb for over 2,000 years.  The tomb was first discovered in 1974 and is considered to be one of the greatest archaeological finds of the century.  We visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, one of the most famous Buddhist pagodas in China. We will also visit the Banpo Neolithic Museum and see the Nestorian Tablet in the Forest of Stelae.      (B,L,D)

 

DAY 7 - XI'AN/YANTAI
Enjoy a morning city tour including the City Wall and Bell Tower, with additional time to wander the Muslim Quarter of the city.  We have a late afternoon flight to Yantai, where we are transferred to the Pacific Hotel.                  (B)

 

DAY 8 - YANTAI/LUNGKOU/PENGLAI
This morning, we take a tour of Yantai,  the old consular city where many missionaries including Lottie Moon first entered China.  After lunch, we travel by motorcoach to Lungkou for visits to the North China Seminary and the open church. Following our time of worship and fellowship here, we continue to Lottie Moon's home base city of Penglai (formerly Tengchow).  Overnight at the Penglai Hotel. (B,L,D)

 

DAY 9 - PENGLAI
We participate in a worship service with fellow Christians at the old Monument Street Church where Lottie Moon worshiped, and where the monument to her stands. Since tourists have become interested in Penglai, the area around the church, known in Moon's time as "the Little Crossroads," has been restored as a Ming Dynasty village. This is a place for strolling and making photos galore; Lottie Moon and other pioneer missionaries lived and conducted schools in this area.  Either by driving or walking, we will reach the seashore and "water city" where Miss Moon took her exercise and then view the historic Penglai Pavillion.      (B,L,D)

 

DAY 10 - PENGLAI/PINGDU/SHALING/QINGDAO
Today, we travel to Pingdu, where Lottie Moon became the first woman to open a mission station alone in China.  She served here from 1885 to the early 1890s.  We will see the tiny Chinese house from which she wrote appeals for a Christmas offering for missions in 1888.  The first Christmas offering for foreign missions was taken in 1888 to provide new missionaries for the growing number of believers in Pingdu.  We visit Miss Moon's beloved rural Shaling Village and other rural sites. Then, we transfer to Qingdao, the city from which Lottie Moon made her final departure from China in 1912.  Overnight at the Equatorial Hotel.      (B,L,D)

 

DAY 11 - QINGDAO/SHANGHAI
Enjoy a half day city tour of Qingdao.  We climb to the top of a scenic pagoda for a city view and take a look at the harbor from which Miss Moon sailed, dying en route to America on December 24, 1912.  This afternoon, we travel to the airport for our flight to Shanghai.  Upon arrival, we check in to the historic Peace Hotel for dinner and overnight. DAY 12 - SHANGHAI
Today's activities include visits to the Grace Church, the Old Baptist University and Seminary and some sightseeing visits: the fabulous Bund with its wide tree-lined boulevard, Shanghai's Old Town, Yu Yuan Garden, the Children's Palace, and the famous Shanghai Museum.  Tonight we say goodbye to Shanghai with a special dinner at a local restaurant followed by an acrobat show. DAY 13 - SHANGHAI/HONG KONG
Today we travel to the airport for our flight to Hong Kong.  Upon arrival, we check in to the Regal Kowloon Hotel for overnight. (B)

 

DAY 14 - HONG KONG
Today we have a tour of the Baptist College, the Hospital, and Hong Kong Island, where we will see the Henrietta Hall Shuck School, one of Hong Kong’s largest.  We will be able to visit Happy Valley Cemetery, where Henrietta, America’s first woman missionary to China, is buried.  There will be ample time for shopping.      (B)

 

DAY 15 - HONG KONG
After a morning Island tour that includes Victoria Peak, Aberdeen Fishing Village, and the Stanley Market, we have the afternoon at leisure for shopping. (B)

 

DAY 16 - HONG KONG/USA
Today our fabulous trip comes to a close.  Crossing the international date line, we turn the calendar back, arriving in the USA and continuing to our hometowns on the same day.(B)
